Dog Training: Do you know how to train your pet?

If you have been lucky enough to have a dog in your life, you probably know the different dog training techniques. On the other hand, if you are a new pet parent, you are probably wondering how to train your dog to be disciplined, well-behaved, and obedient.

Before starting, we tell you that there are different dog training techniques and that you will decide which is best for your pet.

Here are the best dog training techniques so your dog knows how to behave wherever you take him. Take note!

Positive dog training

As the name suggests, this dog training technique is based on rewarding the dog when it behaves well, thus creating positive reinforcement: the dog associates this behavior with a good consequence, so it will understand that you like what it does and, therefore, he will know that every time he does it he will get some sort of reward.

This reward can be in the form of food or in the form of cuddles or caresses. The important thing is that there is positive reinforcement, so that the dog identifies it as something good.

This type of training is one of the most popular, as it has been shown to not only strengthen the human-dog bond, but also increase the dog's ability and willingness to learn.

Traditional dog training

This technique is exactly the opposite of the previous one. It's not about giving positive reinforcement, but about creating negative reinforcement. In this way, when the dog performs an incorrect action or one that we consider harmful to its education, the handler punishes it. Punishment can be psychological (scolding, for example) or physical.

This type of training is considered unethical by many professionals. Furthermore, it has been shown that dogs hardly understand punishment. On the other hand, the relationship between the dog and the trainer (who is usually its owner) is broken by this type of action and increases the fears and insecurity of the animal, which can turn into an aggressive animal, less social and less happy. Unlike positive reinforcement, punishment also makes it more difficult for the dog to acquire knowledge.

Mixed dog training

This technique is based on a combination of the two previous techniques. In this way, positive reinforcement is given to those actions that are considered good or convenient for the dog's education, while negative reinforcement or punishment is given to those actions that are considered bad or inappropriate. Let's say that it is a middle ground between the two, not violent like traditional reinforcement but not even friendly like positive reinforcement.

We strongly recommend that you train with positive reinforcement. Be patient, have fun with him and don't pass your frustrations on to the animal. Remember that the important thing is that he is happy and that you are too.
