Cosa significano le fusa di un gatto?

What does a cat's purr mean?

Although a cat's purring occurs in a wide variety of situations, the reason is always the same: to encourage the cat to relax and feel good. But according to recent studies, purring also has a beneficial effect in case of injuries, illnesses or simply pain.

Most of the time , feline purring indicates that the cat is happy and relaxed . However, cats also purr when they ask for something, such as food, even if it is a different sound.

On the other hand, cats also purr in surprising situations, such as during birth or, in the case of kittens, when breastfeeding, to let the mother know that they are okay.

On other occasions, not at all related to the well-being or joy of cats, they purr even if they are injured, sick, in difficulty or need to be dewormed. They may also purr in case of tension or confrontation, as a pacifist message.

Purring is therefore a form of communication that allows them to strengthen the bond with the owner, express well-being, convey pacifist intentions, relax those around them, say that they feel good, express that they like what is happening, interact with their species or indicate gratitude.

How do cats purr?

For years we have tried to understand what a cat's purr is, but so far it has not yet been completely clarified.

One theory is that the cat's vocal cords allow it to emit this characteristic buzz, accompanied by false vocal cords or vestibular folds. According to this hypothesis, it is the entry and exit of the air that produces this vibration. Other times purring is said to be produced by the contraction of the muscles of the larynx. A third theory holds that purring is produced by the passage of blood through the posterior vena cava, where it crosses the diaphragm.

Feline purrs are a hum that can reach different tones, depending on the animal, the species, the age and the circumstances or reasons why they are made. In the domestic cat it has a frequency between 25 and 150 vibrations per second.

To make a cat purr, it is best to stroke it under the chin, between the ears, on the cheeks or along the back.

What effects does purring have on cats?

Purring has a calming effect on people but also on the cat itself, as it reduces pain, calms it and helps it maintain control. This calming and comforting effect is achieved thanks to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is released as a natural mechanism to control pain or regulate mood.

In fact, having a cat that purrs when touched or caressed not only brings happiness and relaxation, but can lower blood pressure, reduce symptoms of stress and regulate any sleep disturbances in humans.
